This Day in History, January 9th, 1493
Now I know Christopher Columbus is suppose to be an amazing explorer, I get that. He thought the world was round and he could take Europe to the East by traveling West. He wasnt the only person to have had this theory but he was the first to have a country back him up on his idea. Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain let him go over there. This was all amazing on Chris’ part.
HOWEVER, when he got there, which by the way he landed at Santo Domingo, not the current United States. The first United States settlement was Roanoke in 1584, founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. Those poor people never made it though, they either got eaten by some unknown animal or were taken into Native American custody and either killed or integrated into their society. There is no real proof as to what happened to those folks but some researches believe that it is possible that they integrated into the society due to DNA research.
Not only was he not in the East Indiesbut he insisted that he was! His largest faux paw that I feel need correcting is he labeled Native Americans as Indians. This is highly frustrating for me as I have an Indian background but I cant call myself, American Indian, because the title has been taken by a completely different nation of people.
Well, Chris does it again. On this day in 1493, the great explorer who sailed the ocean blue, spotted a manatee in the water and claimed that it was, A MERMAID! Now I know that he deserves his respect as an explorer, but lets get real for a minute…..MERMAIDS? I am so confused as to how he even got over here in the first place.
