“Elizabeth will be named heir apparent,” the King’s words lingered in Elizabeth’s ears over and over in her sleep. Her day seemed something like a bad dream that she could not awaken herself from. She kept hearing the words over and over. She kept seeing the minister’s pale white face in her sleep, as he unenthusiastically gave her forehead the royal anointment. She could still smell the scent in her sleep. She could hear herself reciting the ancient vows of her ancestors before her.
